Although the author and origin of the song are unknown, we do know that it became very popular from 1853 onwards, when the musician Adolphe Adam used it as one of the musical themes of his opera Le Sourd ou l’Auberge Pleine. The simplicity of its musical structure and its lively rhythm make it one of the favorite nursery rhymes for young children. It is now known worldwide, even outside the French-speaking world.
