Dance Monkey on the piano: finding your way around the keyboard

If you don’t yet feel at home on a keyboard, don’t worry! We’re here to help.

First, take a look at the diagram below to get used to the layout of the keys on a piano keyboard:

piano keyboard notes

The name of the notes on a piano keyboard.

In the illustration below, you can see the keys of a piano and their corresponding musical notes (C, D, E, etc.).

The white keys correspond to natural notes, e.g. C, D. The black keys represent altered notes, for example: F# or E♭.

If you look closely at the black keys, you’ll notice that they are grouped in twos or threes. This arrangement makes it easier to navigate the keyboard. On the diagram, groups of two are highlighted in green and groups of three in brown.

To find any note, start by locating C. Each series of notes (C to B) begins with the C key. This is always on the white key to the left of a group of two black keys. Once you’ve found C, it’s easier to spot the other notes, such as B, G, D and so on.

Use this exercise to develop your finger dexterity and your spotting skills:
For the right hand, start with the reference note, C, played with your thumb, then D with your index finger, E with your middle finger, F with your ring finger and G with your little finger. You can do the same with the fingers of your left hand, starting with C played by your little finger, D by your ring finger, and so on.

Practice these notes on the piano. Once you’ve mastered them, you’ll find it easier to learn to play the notes of the Dance Monkey melody on the piano.
